Mikeysline at the Youth Parliament Conference

Attending the Youth Parliament Conference and Introducing our Suicide Prevention Film

We were delighted to be invited to take part in two sessions at the Highland Youth Parliament  Conference on the 16th September. Held virtually and attended by over 100 young people from across the Highlands, the annual conference focused on the Mind Us campaign, which aims at improving the support available for young peoples’ mental health.

It is recognised that a large majority of individuals’ mental health has increasingly suffered during Covid-19, with all aspects of young peoples’ lives being affected, from school and exam disruptions to restrictions on seeing friends and family. In addition to this, young people say that it is difficult to be honest about how they are feeling. We want young people to recognise that it’s ok not to be ok and that it is important to talk about it with someone that they trust - whether that is an adult, a friend or a service like Mikeysline.

During the conference, we led discussions on the topic of youth champions, looking at the role our current youth champions have been playing and the impact of their work to date. We asked young people what they felt youth champions would look like in their area and if they were interested, what training they thought would be needed for the role. In addition to this, we asked how they felt Mikeysline should communicate about their services to young people and we shared our suicide prevention film: Let’s Be the Generation to Turn the Tide On Suicide.

Made in conjunction with Eden Court and Cashback Highlands, our film was created for young people by young people - from initial concept to filming and editing. First shared on World Suicide Prevention Day and sent to schools throughout the Highlands, the film has been well received and we hope that it encourages young people to reach out and talk.
